What if sorcerers were real and they were all around us? Would they hide their talents from us? Would they protect us or try to rule us? Would they consider us their equals or only slightly better than animals?
What if they all had different opinions on these issues? They would certainly fight among themselves for dominance. What if they could absorb the powers of those sorcerers they defeated, increasing their own arcane talents in the process? Would they kill one another inconsequentially or would they protect each other against those that would try to do exactly that?
This book tries to answer that in the form of a supplement for an urban fantasy and action horror game. Inspired by the Harry Potter series, the Highlander movies and the World of Darkness line of games, War of the Magi is a supplement focused on sorcerous characters in a world of supernatural threats and how they deal with that and one another.
Introduction
Users of the arcane arts have lived among the blind (a term they use for all the people that can’t see the sorcerous energies in the world) for thousands of years. Most of this time they have lived in secrecy, hiding their talents and powers from those that wouldn’t understand it both to protect themselves and to protect these individuals from one another.
However, there was a time when sorcerers were more influential and could almost rule great societies of the blind. There was a sorcerer in the past that came very close in becoming the ruler of both the Magi (as the sorcerers call themselves) and the blind, but they were stopped short by an alliance of many clans who united against them. They did this because this sorcerer, known as The Shadow One, wanted to rule by force and fear. The Shadow One killed many Magi that opposed them, draining their Words of Power and becoming more and more powerful, and their followers did the same. It took an alliance of many clans to finally defeat this tyrant and their followers. But this would not last.
Rumors abound that The Shadow One has returned from where it went, and their followers are again at work. The clans that once allied against this threat are now scattered, preoccupied with their own affairs, and many don’t believe that their former enemy could have returned.
It is in this scenario that you and your newly awakened (those that just became Magi) companions find themselves. There are many opportunities for adventures as the Magi work to expand their knowledge, face the threats both mundane and supernatural and take notice of the signs of the upcoming War of the Magi.
What’s War of the Magi?
War of the Magi is a supplement for Dark Streets & Dark Secrets Tabletop RPG. This is a modern game of urban fantasy and action horror which follows the old school spirit of play (as is defined by A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming by Matt Finch).
War of the Magi brings a setting focused on the many adventures and problems the Magi face in a sinister world where the supernatural is real and where greed and thirst for power can corrupt even the best of them.
A terrible war ravaged their world and of the blind years ago and a new one is approaching. The Shadow One has risen again and their servants and followers are already on the move. The clans of the Magi are scattered and divided. Some don’t even recognize that there is any threat coming. The Inquisition that once killed thousands of them is also coming back stronger than ever. And if that wasn’t bad enough, other supernatural threats can also put themselves on the path of the Magi.
Will you and your companions be able to handle all of that while you work to increase and perfect your control over the many Words of Power?
