The Primal World of Thaia – OSE – Equipment

We are back with more previews of rules adaptations to play Old-School Essentials in The Primal World of Thaia. We already talked about the core classes in the Rules Tome (here, here, and here), and about Resources and XP here. Today we will take a look at Equipment and Durability.

Equipment

In the mythical stone age of Thaia, characters have access to fewer items and none of them will be made with metal.

Weapons

This is a fantasy stone age, so most of the weapons are available and have a version made with wood, bones, sinew, stone, insect parts and such. The only exception is the crossbow, which isn’t available (at least initially) to PCs.

  • Wood & Bone: Weapons made with wood and bones cost the standard price multiplied by 2 in units of Resources. They have a Durability of 1.
  • Stone: Weapons made with stone cost the standard price multiplied by 5 in units of Resources. They have a Durability of 2.

Armor

In Thaia, armor is anything the PCs can use to protect them. In terms of game mechanics we use the following in The Primal World of Thaia.

Leather: Leather and hide armor. Cost is the same in Resources.

Chainmail: Hide and pieces of bone and giant insect carapaces. Cost is the same in Resources.

Plate: Hide, bones, stone plaques, and heavy carapaces. Cost is multiplied by 4 in Resources.

Adventuring Gear

Adventuring gear is somewhat different in Thaia, as many more elaborate items are not available.

  • Mirror, and Rations (standard, 7 days) are not available.
  • Cost is multiplied by 2 in Resources.

Durability

Items are usually made either of wood, bone or stone. Everytime a natural “1” is rolled, these items are potentially damaged.

  • Wood and bone: Can only be damaged once, thus Durability 1. Once it’s damaged, it’s broken.
  • Stone: Can be damaged twice, thus Durability 2. Once it’s damaged twice, it’s broken.
  • Bronze: Can be damaged thrice, thus Durability 3. Once it’s damaged thrice, it’s broken.

In the next post we will be back with another play report of our Primal Quest campaign in The Primal World of Thaia, an upcoming zine for Old-School Essentials and Primal Quest!
